  • whether it connects to the letter that follows (all letters connect to the preceding letter)
  • the sound the letter makes
  • how it is transliterated

  • one-way connector
  • rolled “r” sound, as in Spanish “Rumba”
  • transliterated as /r/

ز

  • zay
  • one-way connector
  •  similar sound to “English ” z “
  • transliterated as /z/

و

            و                       ـو                         ـو

  • waw
  • one-way connector
  • as a consonant  it has the sound of “w”  as in “wet”. As a  long vowel it has the sound of long /oo/ as in “soup“. As a diphthong it has the sound of /aw/ as in “proud”.  if preceded by a short “a” sound, it forms the end of the dipthong “aw”
  • transliterated as /w/, /uu/, or /aw/
